Is It Safe to Buy Box-Damaged Beauty Products?

The short answer

Yes, as long as you know exactly what condition you're buying. Box damage means the outer packaging was dented, scuffed or torn while the product itself is untouched. At Pop Up Beauty every item is checked by hand, labelled with its exact condition, and priced at 40% under RRP.

What is box-damaged beauty?

Beauty products get knocked in warehouses, in transit and on shop floors. A crushed corner or torn cellophane means a shop can't sell them at full price, even though the perfume, cream or palette inside is perfect. Other stock is simply surplus. We take in that stock, check every item, and sell it on instead of letting good beauty go to waste.

How do we check every item?

  1. We open every delivery item by item. Nothing is sold unseen.
  2. We check the product and its packaging by hand, looking at the box, the seal, the bottle, and the cap, lid or pump.
  3. We give it one of 13 condition labels and list it at 40% under RRP. The label shows on every product card and product page, so you know exactly what you're getting before you order.

What do the condition labels mean?

Every product on our site carries one label. It tells you exactly what's different.

Label What it means
New Perfect and in its original packaging, with nothing wrong with it.
Minor Box Damage Small marks or dents on the outer box only. The product inside is untouched.
Box Damage The outer box is dented, torn or crushed. The product inside is untouched.
Unboxed Comes without its outer box. The product itself is untouched.
Minor Imperfection A small cosmetic mark on the product or its label. It works exactly as it should.
No Cap The cap is missing. Everything else is as it should be.
No Lid The lid is missing. Everything else is as it should be.
No Pump The pump is missing. Everything else is as it should be.
Cracked Cap The cap is cracked. Everything else is as it should be.
Cracked Lid The lid is cracked. Everything else is as it should be.
Broken Cap The cap is broken. Everything else is as it should be.
Broken Lid The lid is broken. Everything else is as it should be.
Broken Pump The pump is broken. Everything else is as it should be.

The price is the same 40% under RRP for every label, so you choose the condition you're happy with.

Is box-damaged perfume or skincare still genuine?

Yes. Box damage happens to genuine stock; it's the packaging that's imperfect. Ways to check any beauty product, wherever you buy it:

  1. Batch code. Printed or stamped on the box or bottle base. It identifies the production run.
  2. Period after opening. The open-jar symbol (e.g. "12M") on skincare shows how long it lasts once opened.
  3. Quality of the bottle, cap and print. Genuine items have clean, even printing and well-fitted parts.
  4. Price. Genuine designer beauty at 90% off is a warning sign. Ours is 40% under RRP.

Does box damage affect how the product works?

No. The outer box is packaging. A dented box doesn't change the formula, its shelf life or its safety. Things that do affect a product are heat, light and air over time, which is why perfume can darken; our guide to why perfume goes darker explains.

Is box-damaged beauty good for gifts?

For yourself, absolutely. For gifts, choose New, Minor Box Damage or Unboxed and add your own wrapping. Advent calendars are the classic example: big boxes dent easily, but the products inside are individually packed. See are beauty advent calendars worth it?

What brands can I buy for less?

We stock brands including Yves Saint Laurent, Valentino, Elemis, Kérastase, Laneige and The Ordinary. Everything on the site is 40% under RRP, so the whole shop works like a permanent beauty sale: discounted makeup, skincare, hair care and fragrance in one place. Many items are one-offs, so stock changes every week.

Can I return a box-damaged item?

Yes, under our refund policy. The condition label is part of the description, so you know what you're getting before you order. You have 14 days from the day your order arrives to tell us you'd like to return it, then 14 days to send it back. It doesn't need its original packaging; just pack it securely.
